All sizes:

Using 4mm hook for 0-3 months, 4.5mm hook for 3-6 months and 5mm hook for 6-12 months:

Row One:  Make a magic ring, ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), work 12 hdc into ring, sl st to 1st hdc. (12)

Row Two:  ch2, 2 hdc in each stitch around, sl st to 1st hdc (24)

Row Three:  Ch2, fphdc in same st, *hdc in next 3 sts, fphdc in next st*, repeat from * to * to last 3 sts, hdc in last 3 sts, sl st to beg fphdc. (24)

Row Four:  ch2, fphdc in same st, *1 hdc, 2hdc in next st, 1hdc, fphdc*, rep from * to * to last 3 sts.  1 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc, sl st to 1st fphdc. (30)

Row Five:  ch 2, fphdc in same st, * 1 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, fphdc* rep from * to * to last 4 sts.  1 hdc, 2hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, sl st to 1st fphdc.  (36)

The increasing is done, and the “seams” are set in place.  Now the hat has to grow longer in the front than in the back, while making a divide for the button strap, and making the crown sit further back on the head as a baseball cap does.

To achieve this, lay out your work so far in front of you, with the back of the hat towards you.  Divide the circle in half horizontally, and place 2 markers either side at the half way marks, as shown in the next picture.  You can use yarn or stitch markers, whatever you prefer.

For the next part, you need to work in hdc below the markers (to the back of the hat) and dc above the markers (front of the hat).

Keeping pattern as set out previously, continue as follows:

Row Six:  Ch2, fphdc in same stitch as ch 2, hdc 5, fphdc, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, fpdc (note that this is now a fpdc not a fphdc), (dc in next 5 sts twice, fpdc) twice, dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, fphdc, hdc in next 5 sts, sl st to 1st fphdc.

Repeat Row Six until work measures 3.5” (9 cm) for 0-3 months4.0” (10 cm) for 3-6 months, and 4.5” (11.5 cm) for 6-12 months, at the back of the hat.

Divide for Opening:

Slip stitch to 4th st, in 4th st, ch2, hdc in same st as ch2.  Continue in pattern as in Row Six, keeping “seams” in place and working hdc below the markers and dc above the markers, until 3 sts remain.  TURN.

Next Row:  ch2, hdc in same st as ch2, hdc in next 2 sts, bphdc in next, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, bpdc, dc in next 5 sts, bpdc, dc in next 5 sts, bpdc, dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, bphdc, hdc in next 2 sts 2hdc in next stitch, TURN.

Continue back and forth, in pattern, until work measures 4.5” (11.5 cm) for 0-3 months or 5.0” (12.5 cm) for 3-6 months; and 5.5” (14 cm) for 6-12 months, at the back of the hat.

You can now stop working in half hdc and half dc!

Make button strap:

Ch 12 (14, 16).  Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc to end of chain; sl st this piece to the back of the hat  where you ended the prev row and continue in sc to the end of the row.  Do not turn.

Work 3sc in the end stitch, turn the corner, sc 2, sc2tog in the inner corner of the divide, sc across top of divide, again working sc2tog in inner corner, sc 2 up inner edge sc2tog between inner edge and button band, sc in unused loops of the chain you made), until 4 sts remain.  Ch 3, skip 3 sts, sc 1, sl s to beg sc of button band.  Turn.

Ch 1, sc 1, sc 3 in 3 chain previously made, sc across button strap, around divide, again working 3 chain in outer corners and sc2tog in inner corners, up to where the edge of the divide ended before adding the button strap, sl st into the first stitch of the button strap, fasten off.  Tidy up ends, and sew on a matching button.

Peak:

Row 1:  Use double yarn for the peak.  Working on the outside of the hat,  between the front post stitch to the left of the centre fp stitch, and the front post stitch to the right of the centre fp stitch, attach yarn to the front loop only of the 5th stitch from the centre on the right side, sc in the same stitch.  Sc 11, all in flo, sl st to  the next st on the hat itself.  Turn.

Row 2:  ch 1, sc in both loops across to end of row, sl st to the right edge of hat, turn.

Row 3:  ch 1, sl st to top edge of peak, ch 1 again, sc2tog, sc to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn.

Row 4:  ch1, sc in same, sc to end, turn

Row 5: ch1, sc2tog, sc to last 2 sts, sc2tog

Sl st around entire hat, skipping one st in inner corners of back divide, fasten off invisibly.

Tidy up your ends, and your baseball hat is done!
