Aunt Aggie's Lightning Fast Infinity Scarf and Hat (2-5 years)

Here is a pattern for a delightfully soft and squishy scarf/cowl and beanie hat for a child, age 2-5 years.

Scarf measures 48" x 5"

Worked in Chunky yarn, with Aunt Aggie's Extended Mesh Stitch, these items work up incredibly quickly.  If you are looking for a last minute gift, consider these.

The pattern calls for 5.5mm hook, 6mm hook, 7mm hook, and 8mm hook.  The 8mm is optional, but I like to use a larger hook to make the initial chain so that the finished scarf is not too tight on one end.

You will also need 2 skeins Chunky (Bulky/12ply) yarn, and a yarn needle for tidying up ends.

A lovely textured set, which will look great and keep little one very cosy in the coldest weather.

Enjoy!

Scarf measures 48” x 5”.

**Pattern is written in US terms, UK terms are included at the end.**

Scarf:

With 8mm hook and Chunky (Bulky/12ply) yarn, chain 121.

Change to 7mm hook and proceed as follows:

Row 1: Yarn over, insert hook into 4th chain from hook, pull yarn through, skip 1 chain, yo, insert hook into next chain, pull yarn through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through all remaining 4 loops, chain 1; *Yarn over, insert hook into same st as last loop, pull yarn through, yo, sk 1, pull yarn through next st, yo, pull through 2 then all 4 loops, ch1*; Repeat from * to * to last 2 sts. Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch as last loop, pull the yarn through, sk 1, yo,  insert hook into next chain, pull yarn through, yarn over, pull through 2 then all 4 loops; turn.

Holding both ends as if you were joining without a twist, turn one end clockwise vertically so that what was the top of that end is now at the bottom.  Join with a slip stich, then turn.  (you only need to turn once then keep going in rounds.  When you get to the join, sl st as normal, ch1, then begin working in that same stitch around.  Any bumps you see at the join will sort themselves as you go round and around.

Row 2: Chain 1, yarn over, insert hook into same space as ch1, pull yarn through, yo, insert hook into next space, pull yarn through, yarn over, draw yarn through 2 then all 4 loops, ch 1; *yarn over, insert hook into same space as last loop, pull yarn through, yo, insert hook into next space, pull yarn through, yarn over, draw yarn through 2 then all 4 loops; ch 1*; repeat from * to * to last space. Yarn over, insert hook into same sp as last loop, pull yarn through, yo, insert hook into final space, yarn over, draw through 2 then all 4 loops.

Now keep working around the scarf until you reach your desired width.  I worked to 5” since this is for a little one.  One you have reached as far as you wish to go, finish by working (yo, insert in same sp as last loop, pull yarn through, sk 1, insert hook, pull yarn through, pull through all 4 loops) twice, (insert hook into same st, pull yarn through, insert hook into next sp, pull yarn through, yo, pull through all 3 loops, sl st to next st, fasten off.  Weave in ends.

Hat:
Fits 2-5 years

Row 1: Using 6mm hook, make a magic ring; Ch2, make 8 hdc into the ring. Sl st to beg hdc (8).

Row 2: Ch 2; 2 hdc into every stitch around (16)

Row 3: Ch2; 2 hdc into next st; 1 hdc into next st; rep to end (24)

Row 5: Ch2; 2 hdc into next st, 1 hdc into next 3 sts; rep to end (40)

Row 6: Ch2; 2 hdc into next st, 1 hdc into next 4 sts; rep to end (48)

Row 7: Ch1, Yarn over, insert hook same sp as ch1, pull yarn through, skip 1 sp, yo, insert hook into next sp, pull yarn through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through all remaining 4 loops, chain 1; *Yarn over, insert hook into same sp as last loop, pull yarn through, yo, sk 1 sp, pull yarn through next sp, yo, pull through 2 then all 4 loops, ch1*; Repeat from * to * to end.  Sl st to beg ch1.

Row 8:  Chain 1, yarn over, insert hook into same space as ch1, pull yarn through, yo, insert hook into next space, pull yarn through, yarn over, draw yarn through 2 then all 4 loops, ch 1; *yarn over, insert hook into same space as last loop, pull yarn through, yo, insert hook into next space, pull yarn through, yarn over, draw yarn through 2 then all 4 loops; ch 1*; repeat from * to * to last space. Yarn over, insert hook into same sp as last loop, pull yarn through, yo, insert hook into final space, yarn over, draw through 2 then all 4 loops.

Repeat Row 8 until hat measures 6” from the crown.

Next Row:  Ch1, fphdc in same st as ch1; fphdc in every stitch around. (48)

Next Row:  Repeat previous row once.

Next Row:  Change to 5.5mm hook, ch1, fphdc in every stitch around.

Repeat the previous row once.
