Made with Aunt Aggie's Extended Mesh Stitch, a 6mm hook and chunky yarn, it works up lightning fast.
Just the thing for a last minute gift for a little tot.
Zip-A-Dee Beanie ~ 0-3 months
To fit 0-3 months, this beanie uses the Aunt Aggie’s Extended Mesh Stitch. This looks complicated at first glance, but once you’ve done a couple of stitches, you will realise just how easy and fast this stitch is.
Materials: Half a skein of Chunky yarn. I used Stylecraft Special Chunky in “Fondant” colourway. You will also need a 6mm hook, and a yarn needle.
Finished measurements: 14” Circumference; 5.5” height.
Abbreviations: sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; beg = beginning; rep = repeat.
Row 1: Using 6mm hook, make a magic ring; Ch2, make 8 hdc into the ring. Sl st to beg hdc (8).
Row 2: Ch 2; 2 hdc into every stitch around (16)
Row 3: Ch2; 2 hdc into next st; 1 hdc into next st; rep to end (24)
Row 4: Ch2; 2 hdc into next st, 1 hdc into next 2 sts; rep to end (32)
Row 5: Ch2; 2 hdc into next st, 1 hdc into next 3 sts; rep to end (40)
Row 6: Ch 2, Yarn over, insert hook same sp as ch1, pull yarn through, skip 1 sp, yo, insert hook into next sp, pull yarn through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through all remaining 4 loops, chain 1; *Yarn over, insert hook into same sp as last loop, pull yarn through, yo, sk 1 sp, pull yarn through next sp, yo, pull through 2 then all 4 loops, ch1*; Repeat from * to * to end. Sl st to beg ch 2. (20 clusters)
Row 7: Chain 2, yarn over, insert hook into same space as ch1, pull yarn through, yo, insert hook into next space, pull yarn through, yarn over, draw yarn through 2 then all 4 loops, ch 1; *yarn over, insert hook into same space as last loop, pull yarn through, yo, insert hook into next space, pull yarn through, yarn over, draw yarn through 2 then all 4 loops; ch 1*; repeat from * to * end. Sl st to beg ch 2. (20 clusters)
Repeat Row 7 until hat measures 5”.
NOTE: **Always start each row at the base of your ch2, and make sure you don't miss the last cluster of each row by working in the same st as the penultimate one, and finishing in the same space as the beginning cluster, then work your Ch 1 and sl st to beg ch2. If you do not, you will lose a cluster on every row and your count will be off.**
Once your hat has reached 5” from the crown, Chain 1, sc in each st around (40); sl st to beg sc. Ch1, sc in each st around once more, sl st to beg sc, fasten off and weave in ends.
Your Zip-A-Dee hat is Zip-A-Dee done!
