Pattern:

Row 1: With 6mm hook, make a magic ring. Ch2, hdc 9 into ring, sl st to beg hdc. (9)

Row 2: Ch2, 2 hdc into each stitch around (18)

Row 3: Ch2, hdc into same st, *1 hdc into next st, 2 hdc into next st*; rep from * to * around, 1hdc into last st, join. (27)

Row 4: Ch2, hdc into same st, *1 hdc into the next 2 sts; 2hdc into next st* rep from * to * to last 2 sts, 1 hdc into each of the last 2 sts; join. (36)

Row 5: Ch2, hdc into same st, *1 hdc into next 3 sts, 2 hdc into next st* rep from * to * to last 3 sts, 1 hdc into each of the last 3 sts, join. (45)

Row 6: Ch2, hdc into same st, *1 hdc into next 4 sts, 2 hdc into next st* rep from * to * to last 4 sts, 1 hdc into each of the last 4 sts. join. (54)

Rows 7 & 8: Ch2, hdc around, sl st to beg ch2. (54)

Row 9: Ch3, fptrc in next st (working in st 2 rows below the current row ~ see pic below); dc in next st, fptrc in next st – rep around, sl st to beg ch3.

Row 10: Sl st to next st (top of previously worked fptrc); ch 3, fptrc in next st (working in st 2 rows below the current row), dc in next. Note that to make the stitch spiral, you must work into the dc 2 rows below directly to the left of the fptrc, as in the picture below. Rep to end, finishing with a fptrc. sl st to beg ch3.

Row 11: Sl st to next st (top of previously worked fptrc); Ch 3, fptrc in next dc (working in st 2 rows below the current row), dc in top of next fptrc. Don’t forget that to make the stitch spiral, you must work into the dc 2 rows below directly to the left of the fptrc, as in the picture above. Rep to end, finishing with a fptrc. sl st to beg ch3.

Repeat Row 11 until work measures 8” from the crown.

If you want the hat to be more slouchy, work a few extra rows here. If not, carry on as follows:

Next row: Ch1, fpdc in same st and every stitch around (this time working normally on the same row, not stretching the stitch over 2 rows), sl st to beg fpdc.

Repeat this row 4 more times

Change to 5.5mm hook

Ch1, fpdc in same st and every stitch around, sl st to beg fpdc. (for 2 rows)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Your Bulky Accidental Spiral Slouchy is complete!
