Justa Beanie

Print Friendly and PDF

Taking some time out yesterday from the usual manic crocheting and pattern writing, I sat quietly watching a movie and made up this little hat that I thought you all might like.

Just a little beanie/skull cap for throwing on when the weather is chilly.

To fit:  Teens/Adult (M)

Materials:  1 skein worsted weight (aran/10ply) in each of two colours, Colour A and Colour B; 4.5mm (Teens) or 5mm (Adult) hooks; ; 5.5mm hook if you find the band too tight with the 5mm; yarn needle.

Abbreviations:  sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; beg = beginning; rep = repeat.

Gauge:  19 sts and 14 rows hdc on 4.5mm = 4”

This pattern calls for working with 2 colours at once for the first part, the easiest way to do this is to carry both along with you and as you cross them, cross them one way for a few stitches, then cross them the opposite way for the next few stitches.  That way, you keep the yarn from tangling when switching colours every other stitch.  It’s fiddly at first, but once you get the hang of it, you will find it becomes much easier.

If you are not comfortable with switching colours mid-row, you can work rows 1-6 in one colour only.

Pattern is written in US terms, a conversion chart is included at the end.

Pattern:

Row 1:  With 4.5mm hook for Teen size and 5mm hook for Adult size, and Colour A, make a magic ring and start to work 8 hdc into the ring.  Work 1 hdc in Colour A, then attach Colour B, and make the next hdc with Colour B.  Switch back to Colour A then B for each alternate  stitch around.  You don’t need to slip stitch to the beg hdc – just place a stitch marker and keep going around. (8)

Row 2:  Alternating colours every stitch, work 2 hdc into every stitch around. (16)

Row 3:  Still alternating colours every stitch, work *1 hdc into the next st, and 2hdc into the next stitch.* Rep from * to * to end.  (24)

Row 4:  Still alternating colours, work *1 hdc into the next 2 sts, and 2hdc into the next stitch.* Rep from * to * around.  (32)

Row 5:  Still alternating colours, work *1 hdc into the next 3 sts, and 2 hdc into the next stitch*.  Rep from * to * around.  (40)

Row 6:  Still alternating colours, work *1 hdc into the next 4 sts, and 2 hdc into the next stitch*.  Rep from * to * around.  (48).

You can now work one colour at a time, alternating them on each row instead of each stitch.

Row 7:  With Colour B, hdc into each stitch around.  Change to Colour A on the last stitch.

Row 8:  With Colour A, hdc into each stitch around.  Change to Colour B on the last stitch.

Repeat Rows 7 and 8 until hat measures 7.5”.

Change to 5mm hook for Teens size and 5.5mm hook for Adult size.

Next Row:  Drop Colour B and using Colour A, Ch1, sc around to end.

Continue to work each row in the same colour, in single crochet only for 5 more rounds, or until you reach your desired length.

Finish off with one more row of single crochet in contrasting colour.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
