Pattern

Row 1: With 4mm hook and MC, make a magic ring. Ch1, work 7 (9, 10) hdc into ring; sl st to beg hdc. (7, 9, 10)

Note: You may omit the sl st to beg hdc if you wish and work in rounds, in which case, place a stitch marker and carry on with the next row, moving the stitch marker up with each row to keep your place.

Row 2: Ch1 (does not count as a stitch), 2 hdc in same stitch, then 2 hdc in each stitch around, slip stitch to beg hdc. (14,18, 20)

Row 3: Ch1, hdc in same stitch, *2 hdc in next st; hdc in next st;*; rep from * to * to last st; 2 hdc in last st; sl st to beg dc. (21, 27, 30)

Row 4: Ch1, hdc in same stitch and next st, *2 hdc in next st; hdc in next 2 sts;*; rep from * to * to last st, 2 hdc in last st, sl st to beg dc. (28, 36, 40)

Row 5: Ch1, hdc in same stitch and next 2 sts, *2 hdc in next st; hdc in next 3 sts;*; rep from * to * to last st, 2 hdc in last st, sl st to beg dc. (35, 45, 50)

For 3-6 months and 6-12 months, omit Row 6.

For 0-3 months only: Row 6: Ch1, hdc in same stitch and next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st; hdc in next 4 sts;*; rep from * to * to last st, 2 hdc in last st, sl st to beg dc. (42)

Continue working hdc in each st around until work measures 5” (5.5”, 6”). Change to CC on the last stitch to keep the colour change neat.

Work 1 row hdc in CC, change back to MC on the last stitch.

Next Row: Work 1 row hdc in MC, sl st to beg hdc at the end of the row.

Brim:

Row 1: Ch1, sc in same st and in next 2 sts; *2 sc in next st; sc in next 3 sts*; rep from * to * to last 2 sts, sc in next; 2 sc into the last st; sl st to beg sc. (53, 57, 63)

Row 2: Ch1, sc in each stitch around, sl st to beg sc.

Row 3: Ch1, sc in the same st and in next 3 sts; *2 sc in next st; sc in next 4 sts*; rep from * to * to last 3 (2) sts, sc in next 2 (1) st/s; 2 sc into the last st. (64, 68, 76)

Row 4: Ch1, sc in each st around, sl st to beg sc.

(0-3 months & 3-6 months): Row 5: sl st in each st around, when you reach the end of the row, remove the hook and, with a yarn needle, finish off the row as invisibly as you can.

6-12 months only: work an additonal row in sc, then sl st in each st around. With a yarn needle, finish off the row invisibly.

Add a button/applique if you wish; weave in ends, and your hat is complete!
