Easy Granny Hats ~ Newborn to Adult

A very simple beanie that anyone can make, from the most experienced to beginners.  If you can do single crochet, slip stitch and double crochet, you can make this hat.


Materials:  Approx 50g - 100g (depending on size made) worsted weight (aran/10ply) yarn.  I used Drops Paris Cotton for the cotton baby hats, and Stylecraft Special Aran for the Acrylic hats.  4mm, 4.5mm, 5mm and 5.5mm hooks; yarn needle.


Sizes: Newborn to Adult


0-3 months Circumference 12”-14”; Length 5.5”
3-6 months Circumference 14”-16”; Length 6”
6-12 months Circumference 16”-17”; Length 6.5”
1-3 years Circumference 18”-19”; Length 7”
3-10 years Circumference 19”-20”; Length 7.5”
Teens Circumference 20”-21”; Length 8”
Adult Circumference 21”-23”; Length 10”


You will also need, to complete all the hats, crochet hooks as follows:


0-3 months 4mm; 3-6 months 4mm
6-12 months 4.5mm 1-3 years 5mm
3-10 years 4.5mm Teens 5mm
Adult 5.5mm


Pattern is written in US terms; a conversion chart is included at the end.

Abbreviations:  sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; beg = beginning; rep = repeat


Gauge:  12 sts and 16 rows single crochet with 4mm hook = 4”

0-3 months:


If you know how to use a magic ring, go ahead and work that if preferred, otherwise work as follows:


Row 1: With 4mm hook, chain 4.  Sl st in 1st chain to make a loop.  Do not turn.


Row 2:  Chain 3 (counts as beginning dc).  Into the “ring” you just made, work (dc, ch1) once, then (2 dc, ch 1) 4 times; sl st to top of beg ch3.  Do not turn. (15)


Row 3:  Slip stitch over the next 2 sts, to the first ch1 space.  Ch3, (counts as 1st dc).  Into the same space, work (2dc, ch1; 3dc, ch1); sk 2 dc; *into next space work (3dc, ch1, 3dc, ch1)*; repeat from * to * 3 times; sl st to top of beg ch3.  Do not turn.  (40).


Row 4:  Slip stitch over the next 3 dc to the first space; Ch3 (counts as 1st dc); Into the same space, work (2dc, ch1); *skip 3 dc; (3dc, ch1) into the next ch1 space*; rep from * to * 8 times; sl st to top of beg ch3.  (40)


Repeat Row 4 until work measures 5” from the starting ch4 ring (the crown) to the edge of the hat.
Border:


Row 1:  Ch1; sc in same st as ch1, and in every stitch and ch1 space around.  Sl st to beg sc.  (40)


Rows 2-3:  Repeat Row 1.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

3-6 months:


If you know how to use a magic ring, go ahead and work that if preferred, otherwise work as follows:

As you see, with all these hats, you can play around with colours, striping them as you wish; you could add a flower if you wish, but here is the basic pattern.  I hope you have enjoyed it.
