2015 CWU & AC CAL Jen Square

Difficulty: Easy


Materials:  Total of 15 g (26-30 yds) Worsted weight yarn #4; 5mm (H/8) hook; yarn needle.  Sample was made using Lion Brand Heartland in “Denali” (pink), “Everglades” (green) and “Acadia” (Cream).


Abbreviations:  sc = single crochet; ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; trc = treble crochet; st/s = stitch/es; rep = repeat; beg = beginning; sp = space.


Gauge:  Not critical for this pattern but the finished square must be 6” for the Blanket CAL.  Adjust your hook up or down a size depending on your own tension.  With 5mm hook, mine was 5 x 3dc clusters and 6 rows of 3dc clusters in 4” x 4”


Finished size:  6” square.


Pattern is written in US terms; a conversion chart is included at the end.


Use the colours of your choice as Colour A, Colour B and Colour C.


Row 1:  With 5mm hook and Colour A, Make a magic ring, ch1, work 8 hdc into the ring, sl st to beg hdc.  Alternatively, ch 4, sl st to last chain from hook to make a ring, work 8 hdc into the ring, sl st to beg hdc.  (8)


Row 2:  Ch1 (does not count as a st); hdc in same st as ch1, (ch 4, sk1, hdc in next st) 3 times; ch4, sk1, sl st to beg hdc (20)  Change to Colour B


Row 3:  With Colour B, sl st to 1st ch 4 loop. ch 3,  3dc in same loop, ch4; (4dc in next loop, ch4) 3 times; sl st to top of beg ch 3. (32)


Row 4:  Ch3 (counts as a st), dc in next 3 sts, ch1; *(2 dc, ch2, 2dc) in next loop; ch1, dc in next 4 sts, ch1; rep from * twice; (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next loop, ch1; sl st to beg hdc.  (48)  Change to Colour C.


Row 5:  With Colour C, Ch3 (counts as a st),  dc in next 3 sts; 1 dc in next ch1 space; sk2, *(3 dc, ch2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 space, sk2; 1 dc in next ch1 space; dc in next 4 sts, 1 dc in next ch1 sp; rep from * twice, (3 dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch 2 space, sk2 dc, 1 dc in ch1 space; sl st to beg ch3. (56)  Change back to Colour A.


Row 6:  With Colour A, sl st forward over 1 st; Ch 3 (counts as a st); 2 dc in same st; ch1, sk2 sts, 3dc in next st, ch1, sk 3 sts,  *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next corner ch 2 space; (ch1, sk 2, 3dc in next) 3 times,  ch1, sk3; rep from * twice; (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next corner ch 2 space; ch1, sk 2, 3dc in next st; ch1, sk2, sl st to top of beg ch3.  (84)


Fasten off and weave in ends.
